From Paper Forms to Digital Workflows: How RRapidmapS is Streamlining Emergency Response

In 2018, Rapid Response Systems attempted to bring our RRapidmapS into existence, an integrated comprehensive digital response tool, to the Treasure Valley in Idaho for the Snake River Geographical Response Plan by using UAS data and an interactive digital map. However, due to limitations such as mobile form applications and cost prohibitive licensing fees, the attempt was not successful as my mind envisioned it to be.
Today, RRapidmapS has evolved into a powerful solution for situational awareness and data-driven decisions for emergency responders, including spill management teams and tactical responders, right in the field.


Why?


One of the biggest differences between 2018 and now is the availability of no-code, fast, agile, and customizable platforms that can be configured on the fly and integrate with ArcGIS. This means that the development and beta testing process for mobile forms is much shorter, enabling digital forms and not paper forms to be implemented quickly and efficiently. What took years is literally done in minutes and that kind of advancement is the norm in today’s rapidly changing world of technological innovations.


Another significant difference is the availability of public information for real-time data inputs. In 2018, public information was often outdated or not available at all, making it difficult for responders to gather data to make informed decisions. Today, the availability of real-time data inputs helps emergency responders stay on top of the situation and make more informed decisions. Information, namely digital information is growing in complexity and availability.


Licensing fees were also a significant challenge in 2018, but they are no longer cost-prohibitive, making RRapidmapS more accessible to emergency responders, facilities, and agencies.
The availability of faster computers and tablets also means that digital data can be visualized and transferred in real-time more efficiently.
Perhaps the most significant difference is the introduction of Starlink, a low-latency, reliable, and low-cost communications platform designed to allow humans to communicate from almost anywhere in the world. Starlink allows tactical teams to access and use digital response strategies anywhere, effectively and strategically. This feature greatly enhances the capabilities of RRapidmapS and enables responders to make more informed, rapid decisions about where to focus their resources right from the scene of the crisis. The other important aspect about RRapidmapS is that humans are visual beings. We think faster and react quicker when our eyes see what’s going on in our environment. RRapidmapS organizes digital data so our eyes can see what’s going on and this brings situational awareness to a new level.
